A global energy trading firm in Chicago seeks an experienced Power Markets Trading Strategist (Lead) to provide market views of key U.S. power markets. This position is part of the Power Market Analytics Team (Commercial Operations) that supports the renewable power generation portfolio’s dispatch, trading, optimization, and hedging decisions. You will work closely with power asset traders, market analysts, and risk management teams to analyze market data, forecast trends, and execute trades in various energy markets. This role requires a deep understanding of power markets, trading models, and risk management practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be part of a team responsible for developing proprietary models and building the production cost model (DAYZER software) to support asset and congestion traders with short-term cash and term Trading outlooks and strategies across the spot, day-ahead, forward power markets, etc.
  • Update and run the production cost model to forecast cash and term wholesale electricity market prices (~0-5-year time horizon) in the U.S. Initially, the focus is ERCOT, but expanding to other markets (CAISO, PJM, MISO, etc.) in the future.
  • Work with internal teams to capture and analyze power market fundamental data assumptions, including conventional and renewable generation capacity, load demand, fuel price movements, generation and transmission constraints, weather forecasts, regulatory changes, etc.
  • Perform daily model runs and back-tests and develop multiple forecast scenarios (including stochastic ones) to help the team define a future view of power market prices.
  • Forecast the impact of new wind, solar, and battery storage generation on the U.S. electricity generation mix and market prices.
  • Provide insights on market fundamentals, supply-demand balances/curves, and potential risks.
  • Collaborate with traders to optimize trades across the ERCOT market (expanding to CAISO, PJM, MISO, etc.) and cash/term timeframes for wind, solar, and battery storage generation assets.
  • Report on trading performance and risks and provide recommendations to optimize portfolio returns.

Educational and Professional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Engineering, Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or similar).
  • Minimum of 3- 5+ years of power market experience in fundamental analysis, trading/market analytics, consulting, market research, or commercial operations (power trading or asset trading and optimization).
  • Market experience in one or more ISOs: CAISO, ERCOT, MISO, NEISO, NYISO, PJM, or SPP.
  • Strong knowledge of power market structures (security-constrained economic dispatch and unit commitment, nodal/zonal price formation, capacity auctions, co-optimizing energy and reserves, etc.), energy trading platforms, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Skilled in fundamental modeling (particularly production cost modeling), quantitative analysis, data modeling, and risk management.
  • Experience with production cost modeling tools (Aurora, DAYZER, PLEXOS, PROMOD, UPLAN).
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel and other analytical tools (SQL) (required).
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or MATLAB (desired).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
