An international energy company that is building out a power trading & origination business in Houston is searching for a Senior Power Fundamental Strategist to join its Power Commercial Analytics team. Fundamental Analysis will cover the ERCOT, SPP, PJM and MISO power markets. This newly created position collaborates with the traders and originators to undertake market analytics for the Cash and Term power markets, to assist with trade idea generation and vetting and to support hedging activities.

 

Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the build out of a power fundamentals infrastructure,
  • Serving as SME for fundamental market conditions and drivers that impact the power markets in an assigned ISO region with a focus on hubs/zones,
  • Developing forward fundamental power views,
  • Conducting fundamental research for the next month out 3 years),
  • Evaluating new market builds and retirements of generation and transmission to quantify impact to regional generation stacks,
  • Reviewing and quantifying weather sensitivity on regional power dynamics,
  • Tracking federal and ISO market rule changes, infrastructure changes and near-term demand and fuel prices,
  • Identifying market inefficiencies, price opportunities and strategies for the traders and originators,
  • Summarizing themes and strategies of suggested trades versus the overall portfolios and broader power markets,
  • Developing trader tools, and
  • Undertaking ad hoc requests from senior traders and originators.

 

Educational and professional requirements include a bachelor’s degree in a numerate field (Master’s/MBA degree is a plus); 10+ years of professional experience with the North American power markets in a power trading commercial environment; experience with analyzing Short-Term Cash and Term power markets (3 years+); an understanding of North American power supply/demand and infrastructure fundamentals; proven ability to build analytical trading tools; and ability to think commercially with strong communication skills. The candidate must have market knowledge in one of the following markets: ERCOT, SPP, PJM or MISO and ideally experience in more than one market.
