An international energy company in Houston seeks a Senior Analyst for its Fundamental Analysis Team to support its Power and Natural Gas businesses. This newly created role will continue building the power fundamentals infrastructure for the U.S. business. The Fundamental Analysis team provides internal POV on key power markets, aids corporate strategy initiatives, including capital projects and M&A activity, and supports asset trading. This role reports to the Head of Fundamental Analysis and extensively interacts with the Commercial Operations, Quantitative Analysis, and Market Risk teams.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Conduct fundamental research, modeling, and analysis for conventional and renewable energy power plants (PJM, NYISO, NEISO, ERCOT).
  • Run PLEXOS dispatch modeling and BI reporting tools.
  • Develop short and long-term regional supply and demand models, focusing on a 5-20-year modeling horizon that supports forward margin analysis and PPA / M&A activity.
  • Provide internal points of view on key fundamental drivers of the East and ERCOT power markets. Ad hoc analysis on CAISO and MISO.
  • Track market rule changes, plant retirements, new builds, transmission upgrades, near-term demand, and fuel prices.
  • Provide power price forecasts, market drivers, and related congestion impacts.
  • Forward view on generation, transmission, load, and impact on power prices and heat rates.
  • Enhance or develop capacity market, stack, and REC models by region.
  • Monitor industry regulations, writing/ presenting white papers to key stakeholders.
  • Assist the Head of Fundamental Analysis with KPIs and board reporting.

 

Professional and Educational Requirements:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a business discipline with an advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5+ years of professional experience in power fundamental modeling for the North American power markets at a utility, IPP, merchant trading firm, or energy consulting firm
  • Desire to be a part of a high-performing and analytical team.
  • A detailed understanding of the North American power supply/demand and infrastructure fundamentals.
  • Experience with one or more markets: CAISO, ERCOT, MISO, NEISO, NYISO, PJM or SPP.
  • Experience with market dispatch software, including PLEXOS, AURORA, DAYZER, GE-MAPS, PROMOD, PSO, or similar software packages.
  • Model-building skills; experienced with analytical and data manipulation applications.
  • Experience with at least one programming language generally used in financial models, such as VBA, MATLAB, Python, R, SAS, etc. (highly desired).
